About
A register of mechanism
Something must let the train forward in equal amounts, and something must count them. This site files timekeeping by the mechanism rather than by the maker.
Each entry states the same three things in the same order: what the mechanism does, what error it introduces, and what was done about it. Where a number settles the matter, the number is attached to the entry rather than left in the prose.
The five sections follow the machine rather than its history. Escapements is the release problem and its answers. The Oscillator is what does the counting and what upsets it. The Train is the arithmetic between the two. Regulation is what is adjustable and what only looks adjustable. After Mechanics follows the same argument into quartz and caesium.
The photography is of real movements, benches and instruments. Captions carry the thing a picture cannot show — a tolerance, a ratio, a reason — rather than describing what is already visible.
